pierced longitudinally for mounting or threading, the middle of this scarab displays a short, non-sensical inscription. It is enclosed by a continuous interlocked spiral scroll element that is very precise and crisply incised, the whole layout being very well organized and symmetrically arranged. The trapezoidal head is flanked by rectangular eyes; the side plates are irregular trapezoidal, and the clypeus (front plate) has frontal serrations, and a central base notch. The raised, slender extremities have natural form and vertical hatch lines for the tibial teeth and pilosity (hair). The scarab functioned as an amulet to secure divine support and renewal for the private owner.

Condition:  the scarab is intact and in very good condition overall, with museum quality custom mount.

Dimensions:  height:  1 inch (2.5 cm)

Provenance:  Private NYC collection, ex. CT collection, ex. John N. Winnie, Jr. collection, Georgia, 1980’s-90’s.
